Our Story
Datum was founded in Dallas in 1937 by Frank Chappell, a much-admired engineer whose many high-profile Dallas projects included the Cotton Bowl and other historically significant buildings in Dallas.
In 1963, a very young Thomas Taylor took over operations of the firm and began to build on Mr. Chappell’s legacy.
Over the years, the firm has provided elegant engineering solutions for many well-known Texas projects, such as Thanks-Giving Square, the Ballpark in Arlington, the Chapel of St. Ignatius, EDS Headquarters and the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank.

Today, Datum has grown into a regional leader in structural engineering. We employ over 30 licensed engineers and other professionals in four offices and work on signature projects nationwide.
Our passion for architecture has led to our relationships with such renowned architects as Renzo Piano, Steven Holl, Cesar Pelli, Philip Johnson, Antoine Predock, & Thom Mayne plus numerous international design firms.
Datum remains committed to building on our legacy of design excellence, cultivating our enthusiasm for architecture and practicing the Art of Structural Engineering.
